Po`ipu
Bay Golf Course, 2250 Ainako Street, Koloa (across from Grand

18 holes, 7,123 yards, par 72; greens fees $185 (includes cart), after
12 pm $125, after 2:30 $72. Po`ipu Bay Golf Course offers the best in
championship golf. It has numerous awards from golf and travel magazines
and has hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf every year since 1994. Designed
by Robert Trent Jones, the course is a real treat. The setting is beautiful.
You have the ocean on one side and spectacular mountain views on the other.
There is a heiau at hole 16. You might get distracted by the ocean views
and could probably spot a green sea turtle or a humpback whale if you
looked carefully.
Phil Mickelson set the Po`ipu Golf Course record in the 2004 PGA Grand
Slam of Golf. His score for the day: 59.
Po`ipu Bay offers a daily clinic for $35 and lessons for $40 per half-hour.
The clubhouse has excellent pro shop locker facilites and club storage.
If this place is good enough for the likes of Tiger Woods, Ernie Els,
Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson, it’s good enough for you. Grand
Hyatt Resort & Spa has a professional golf shop in the hotel lobby.
Here you can buy a variety of golf equipment and apparel. The shop is
open from 8 am-6 pm.
Kiahuna
Golf Club, 2545 Kiahuna Plantation Drive, Po`ipu,
808-742-9595, www.kiahunagolf.com.
Greens fees $110 (with cart), 16 and under $75, after 2 pm $75; 18 holes,
6,885 yards, par 70. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. took great care in designing
this course. It includes sites of historic interest such as a heiau, and
the remains of a Portuguese house and crypt. Kiahuna has five sets of
tees, even tees for junior players (the only junior tees in Hawaii). Players
at all levels will enjoy the challenges posed by water hazards and tradewinds.
Kiahuna has a fully stocked pro shop. You can take golf lessons
here and there’s also a driving range on-site.
Kukuilono Golf Course, Papalina Road, Po`ipu,
808-332-9151; greens fees $7 per day, kids 17 and under $3 per day; cart
fee $6 per nine holes; nine holes, 3,077 yards, par 36. Kukuilono Golf
Course is a public course that was built in 1929 by Walter McBryde. It
was the second course on Kaua`i, behind Wailua Golf Course. McBryde donated
the land to the state and the golf course is now among the most beautiful
and least expensive in the entire state. He’s actually buried by
the eighth hole. This is a great course for beginners and hackers alike.
There aren’t that many hazards. Experienced golfers will enjoy the
views. The course overlooks the plains and ocean. Wind definitely becomes
a factor here.
This area is also home to Kukuilono Park, which features
stunning views and a small Japanese garden. Take a walk through when you’re
done with your round. Tee times start at 7 am sharp. Greens fees are an
unbelievably low $7 per day. You can’t beat it.
