offers a 4½- hour guided tour that heads up to Secret Falls. You
start out at the Wailua Marina and kayak approximately two miles up the
Wailua River. Along the way, your guide will point out the flora and fauna.
The paddle takes about 45 minutes. You’ll then go for a short hike
to Secret Falls, where you eat the “bring your own” lunch
and swim around the falls. This is a fantastic paddle for beginners. Amazingly,
this tour only costs $39 per person.
Kaua`i Water Ski and Surf Co, Kinipopo Shopping Center,
Wailua,

offers a the “Deluxe Discovery Tour,” a guided kayak tour
on the Wailua River that includes a picnic lunch, bottled water, hike
to a waterfall, and swimming. The local guide shares his knowledge of
Hawaiian history, culture, legends and local flora. This five- to six-hour
tour costs $75 per person. They also rent kayaks.
Paradise Kayaks, Kuhio Highway, Kapa`a (across from
Kaua`i Products Fair),
808-822-1112, has five- and six-hour tours that travel up theWailua River,
then hike to a waterfall and diving pool. Lunch is provided as well. This
is a very child-friendly outfit and has kayaks just for kids. The five
hour tour costs $98 in a double kayak, $138 for a single kayak. The six-hour
tour is $128 for a double kayak, $188 if you want to ride in a single
kayak. They also rent kayaks that start at $30 a day.

They will take you from their Po`ipu office to Wailua, where you’ll
paddle downstream and take a somewhat rugged one-mile hike up the valley
to a dramatic 130-foot waterfall with a pool at the bottom. There you’ll
have lunch and then hike back down to the kayaks. Along the way back,
your guides talk about the unique food and medicinal plants of the area.
Ali`i Kayaks, Harbor Mall, Lihu`e,
808-241-7700, offers a tour of the Wailua River. Your guide will also
explain why the river is so revered in Hawaiian culture. You’ll
also hike up to Secret Falls, where you have lunch. Plan on four miles
of kayaking, and about 1½ miles of hiking. Tour duration is approximately
4½ hours and costs $104 per person.
Wailua Kayak & Canoe, Kuhio Highway, Wailua (across
from Kintaro Restaurant),
808-821-1188, offers a four-hour waterfall tour that travels up the Wailua
River to a picnic lunch. The guides share Hawaiian history and legends
along the way. Tours start at $39 per person. They also rent two-person
kayaks and launch from their baseyard right on the river. There’s
no need to struggle with car racks.
Wailua River Kayak Adventures,
808-822-5795, has a couple of tours of the Wailua River area. The Jungle
River Safari is a four- to five-hour trip up theWailua River. You paddle
at your own pace while your trained guide fills you in on the historical
and religious significance of the area. You also stop on the edge of the
river for drinks and snacks, then take a jump off a rope swing. The Jungle
River Safari is $85 per person. The second tour takes you to Secret Falls.
It is also four to five hours in duration and costs $85 per person. They
rent singles for $25 and doubles for $50 all day.
Kayak Kaua`i, Kapa`a,
800-437-3507, 808-826-9844, will let you strike out on your own, renting
you a double and car top for your kayak from their Kapa`a office, located
minutes away from the boat launching area. You can paddle to Secret Falls
or Fern Grotto. A double kayak rental starts at $75 a day.

rents kayaks starting at $50 a day.
