Wailua Municipal Golf Course, 3-5350 Kuhio Highway, Wailua, 808-241-6666, www.kauai.gov/golf. Greens fees for non-residents $32 on weekdays, $44 Saturday and Sunday. After 2 pm, the rates are $16 weekdays, $44 weekends. 18 holes, 6,981 yards, par 72. This is the best golf deal you can get. Wailua Municipal Golf course is a superb value. It was originally built as a nine-hole course back in 1929. Local golf legend Toyo Shirai designed the other nine holes in 1961.

Its signature hole is the 456-yard, dogleg left #2, which runs along the ocean and is considered the most difficult on the course. The first, second, 14th and 17th holes have greens that overlook the ocean. The parfive holes average over 530 yards and the par-three holes for the most part are reachable. The parfour holes can be a bit of a challenge and require a combination of strength and skill.

Wailua has hosted three USGA Amateur Public Links Championships and has been voted one of Hawai`i’s best 15 golf courses by Golf Digest. The course tends to be packed with local golfers and visitors alike. It’s wise to book your tee time at least a week in advance.
