Nawiliwili Harbor is home to most of the fishing charter companies on the island. Any one of these tours will offer deep sea fishing or bottom fishing.

Kai Bear, 808-652-4556, www.kaibear.com, has four- and six-hour shared charters ranging from $160 to $230. They also have four- , six- and eight-hour private charters starting at $800. They get you fishing within 15 minutes of leaving the slip on their 38- or 42-foot Bertrams. They also provide you with one custom-made Blue Water Rod and Penn International Gold two-speed reel and lures. Depending on the season, you can catch ahi (tuna), marlin, and mahi-mahi.

True Blue Charters, 808-246-6333, will provide you with all of the necessary items: bait, tackle, lures. Deep sea fishing includes marlin, tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi and shark. Bottom fishing includes mackerel, rudder fish, wrasse, sea bass, and rainbow runner. Prices start at $139 per person for a four hour trip or $179 for a six-hour trip. Eight-hour excursions are also available.

Breakaway Fishing Charters, 808-635-9456, is run by Captain Jeff Steiner, who offers private and shared charters. The tours last four to eight hours, with equipment and beverages provided. Afour-hour shared tour starts at $115 per person and rates go up to $1,000 for an exclusive all-day charter. You can go trolling, bating or bottom fishing. At the end of your trip, Captain Jeff will fillet and divide fish.

Captain Don’s Sportfishing, 808-639-3012, www.captaindonsfishing.com, will take you fishing aboard the June Louise, which is a 34-foot twin diesel. You be looking to catch mahimahi, ono and ahi. The captain will clean and fillet your catch for you. If you’ve finally caught the whopper that would look great over the fireplace back home, Captain Don will put you in touch with the taxidermists to get it mounted. A four-hour shared charter costs $125 per person and goes up to $875 for an eight-hour private charter.

Lahela Ocean Adventures, 808-635-4020, will take you to catch marlin, mahi-mahi or tuna. After your trip, they can have your trophy catch mounted and shipped to you or they will fillet portions of your catch. They do four- , six- or eight-hour private and shared tours starting at $425. If you just want to pick up a pole and see what happens, you can go to Ahukini State Recreational Pier. It’s a small, one-acre park at the southern end of Hanama`ulu Bay. It’s a popular place for pole fishing. The bay is a Marine Protected Area and is regulated by the state. If you plan on spearfishing or net fishing in the area, check with the Department of Land and Natural Resources for more information at 808-274-3344 or write Division of Aquatic Resources, 3060 Eiwa Street, Room 306, Lihu`e, HI 96766. To get to the pier, drive to the end of Ahukini Road (Highway 570) off Kuhio Highway (Highway 56) in Lihu`e.

Another popular spot for pole fishermen is Nawiliwili Park, right next to Kalapaki Beach. If anything, it’s convenient. You literally just drive up, drop your line and see what happens. Stop by Lihu`e Fishing Supply, 2985 Kalena Street, 808-245-4930, for any fishing supplies you need.
