Aloha Canoes & Kayaks, 808-246-6804, takes you on a three-hour tour up the Huleia River, where you’ll see the Menehune Fishpond and Kipu Ranch. From Kipu Ranch you hike to a waterfall and swimming area. The morning and afternoon tours cost $70 per person. There’s a midday tour that includes lunch for $82 per person.

Ali`i Kayaks, Harbor Mall, 808-241-7700, has a one-hour guided kayak tour around Kalapaki Bay. If you have no idea what you’re doing with a kayak, this is a good way to get introduced to the sport. Cost is $21 per person. They also offer a tour of the Wailua River. Your guide will explain way the river is so revered in Hawaiian culture. You hike up to Secret Falls, where you have lunch. Plan on four miles of kayaking, and about 1½ miles of hiking. Tour duration is approximately 4½ hours and costs $104 per person.

Island Adventures, 808-246-6333, www.kauaifun.com, runs a kayak/hiking tour through Huleia National Wildlife Refuge. You paddle 2½ miles, then hike along an interesting forest trail full of exotic plantlife, birds and an occasional wild pig. After the hike, you hop on a van that takes you to a waterfall and swimming area. The cost is $89 per person for approximately three hours.

Outfitters Kaua`i, 2827A Po`ipu Rd, Po`ipu, 888-742-9887, 808-742-9667, runs kayak and hiking trips on the Huleia River. You go through the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge, past Menehune Fishpond, as you paddle for about two miles up the river. You then tie up your kayak and hike three-quarters of a mile to Hidden Falls. You hike back to the river and then are picked up in a motorized canoe for the trip back. There’s a morning tour that costs $94 per person. The afternoon tour includes lunch and costs $104 per person.

Kaua`i Beach Boys, 808-632-0071, rents double or single sit-on-top kayaks with life jackets and tall backrests. They’re really meant to stay around the Kalapaki Beach area. The kayaks are just fine for a quick cruise, but not for a long haul.

Ali`i Kayaks, 808-241-7700, 3501 Rice Street, Harbor Mall, Lihu`e, will rent a kayak only if you’re going to stay in Kalapaki Bay and the Huleia River. They do not rent for the Wailua River. Rentals run $15 and hour or $45 per day.
