Snorkeling Tours
SeaFun Kaua`i, 1702 Haleukana Street, Lihu`e,
808-245-6400, has a four-hour snorkel tour that is perfect for beginners.
You’ll be provided with snorkel equipment and the tour is led by
a marine biologist, who is eager to explain all of the mysterious marine
life. They visit different beaches, depending on current ocean conditions,
to provide the best possible experience for you. You’ll also get
basic instructions if you’re new to snorkeling.
Captain
Don’s Sportfishing, Nawiliwili Harbor,
808-639-3012, www.captaindonsfishing.com.
If you’re looking for a private charter, check out Captain Don’s
Sportfishing. He’ll take you out along Kaua`i’s south
shore. All equipment is provided, including flotation devices. Beginners
are welcome, and Captain Don will give you with instructions if you need
them. A three-hour trip will cost $375 and a four-hour run will be $475.
Places to Snorkel
If you want to go snorkeling on your own in the Lihu`e area, your best
bets are Kalapaki Beach and Ninini Beach.
The snorkeling in the area tends to be only fair at most times, but both
beaches do have good snorkeling on very calm days. At Kalapaki, it tends
to be calmer toward the eastern end of the beach.
You can pick up gear from Kaua`i Beach Boys, right at
Kalapaki Beach. Free snorkeling instruction and tips are available with
every rental, along with a snorkel map to direct you to the best snorkel
spots on Kaua`i.
You should also stop at any of the rental shops listed above or at any
grocer or pharmacy and pick up an underwater camera for about $12-$17.
They are surprisingly easy to manage underwater. In order to take the
best shots, you’ll need to get pretty close. If the water’s
clear, you can certainly pick up the vibrant colors of reef fish.
Tubing
Kaua`i
Backcountry Adventures, Hanama`ulu,
808-270-0555, 808-245-2506, takes you on a fun tubing adventure through
the historic irrigation system of the former Lihu`e Plantation. This ditch
and tunnel system that once irrigated vast sugar crops had been unused
since sugar was taken out of production in 2000. Kaua`i Backcountry Adventures
opened it up in January 2003 and it has been a popular tour on the island
ever since. It’s a very relaxing way to spend the afternoon as you
travel through tunnels and down the ditch. After that, you’re taken
to a natural swimming hole for swimming and a deli lunch. My only complaint
is that the tubing could have lasted a little longer. The guides are incredibly
friendly and make sure that you’re having a great time. You can
tell they enjoy what they do. The tour lasts about three hours and is
$99 per person.
