One route that’s great is the Kalepa Ridge Trail. It’s a three-mile singletrack trail (three miles out and three back). It begins at the end of Hulei Road in Hanama`ulu and the ends with a grand view that overlooks the Wailua River. There are many other stunning view of the coastline, Kipu Ridge and Wai`ale`ale. The trail is appropriate for intermediate to advanced riders. There are some areas that will be too steep to ride, where you’ll have to dismount and carry your bike. It’s a dry dirt trail, so you should stay off the trail if it’s wet.

To rent a bike, you can go to Kaua`i Cycle and Tour, 1379 Kuhio Highway in Kapa`a, 808-821-2115. They offer rentals starting at $15 a day. They also have maps and guided tours from $65 a day.

Stop by Outfitters Kaua`i, 2827A Po`ipu Rd, Po`ipu, 808-742-9667, www.outfitterskauai.com, to rent a bike and a car rack, throw the bikes on and go to town. They also offer bike maps to make it easier for you to find your way around.

Coming from Hanalei, you can rent one from Pedal-NPaddle, 808-826-9069, www.pedalnpaddle.com, at Ching Young Village. They rent mountain bikes for $20 a day or $80 a week. Pedal-N-Paddle also has tandem bikes at $10 a day and cruisers for $10 a day or $30 a week.
