Big Island of Hawaii - Kailua-KonaBig Island of Hawaii
Adventures on Water - Surfing
Banyans. The fiercest surfing in town happens at Banyans, just north of the three-mile marker on Alii Drive. The wave is quick and hollow, but competition and vibes from the local boys make it a challenge to drop into one. Kahalu`u. Even when the sea is dead flat you’ll
still see a lineup at the break at Kahalu`u. This is where most surf lessons
take place, and when there’s a cruise ship (or two or three) in
town they’ll show up here whether it’s breaking or not. However,
if there’s a swell from any direction, waves and surfers stack up
at the northern point of the bay. It’s a forgiving wave that closes
out when the waves get too big. Locals flock here, too, so you’ll
often see pros and complete novices hanging in the same lineup. Beware
an occasional nasty rip.
